How Do We Deal with Our Emotions in Times of Uncertainty?

How Do We Deal with Our Emotions in Times of Uncertainty?

At the beginning of this week, I was preparing to travel to deliver an important training program. Everything was ready, but suddenly, the flight was canceled due to the circumstances in the region.

I felt frustrated, anxious, and tense, and I allowed myself to experience these emotions as they were, without trying to deny them or rush through them.

It was 4 a.m., and I found myself talking to myself and asking:

  • What can I control at this moment?
  • What do I need to accept, even if I do not like it?
  • How can I reframe this experience in a way that serves me rather than drains me?

I found that these simple questions helped me greatly, and I wanted to share some of the steps I followed:

1. Naming the emotions
I paused to recognize my emotions as they were, without judgment or denial. Simply being able to name what we are feeling can give us more space to understand and navigate it.

2. Regulating my breathing
I took slow, deep breaths to calm myself and regain the ability to see the situation with greater clarity.

3. Reframing the experience
Instead of telling myself, “I am frustrated,” I asked, “Can I use this time to rest and recharge?”

4. Focusing on what I can do
I returned to my priorities and began thinking about the small steps I could take from where I was, rather than exhausting my energy trying to change what was beyond my control.

5. Practicing self-compassion
I gave myself the space and time I needed, and reminded myself that I was not alone in experiencing uncertainty, and that going through moments of confusion and anxiety is part of being human.

When morning came, I reached out to my friends and family. It was not only about seeking comfort, but also about listening to different perspectives.

Sometimes, we get caught in an “internal story” that we create for ourselves, and we need an outside voice to help us see the bigger picture and remind us of what is real and what we can actually deal with in the present moment.

For me, this experience became a real-time exercise in emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence is not about controlling our emotions or preventing them from appearing. It is about becoming more aware of them, learning how to move through them with flexibility, and choosing our responses consciously rather than allowing our emotions to automatically dictate them.

In moments of uncertainty, we may not always have the ability to change what is happening around us. But we can choose how we listen to our emotions, how we care for ourselves, and how we direct our attention toward what we can do.

What helps you navigate moments like these?
